Following the disastrous fall of the Neapolitan Republic in 1799, among the most illustrious victims of the first Bourbon Restoration was also the elderly Cardinal Giuseppe Maria Capece Zurlo (1711-1801), Archbishop of Naples from 1782. On the basis of an in-depth archival and bibliographical investigation, the author reconstructs the phases of the forced collaboration of the Neapolitan Curia with the republican authorities and with the French military leaders and the subsequent period of the Archbishop's exile in the abbey palace of Loreto di Montevergine, with serious consequences for the complicated government of the Church of Naples. Furthermore, the volume highlights how the very tight state control over ecclesiastical institutions rigidly imposed by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, Queen Maria Carolina and their most trusted advisors had contributed to significantly weakening relations between the Kingdom of Naples and the Holy See at the dawn of the 19th century, in a perverse intertwining of politics and religion.
